Leicester City could extend unwanted Premier League record for one Southampton star

Leicester City go in search of consecutive Premier League wins when they travel to Southampton this weekend.

The international break came at the wrong time for Leicester City as the Foxes secured a 1-0 win over Bournemouth thanks to Facundo Buonanotte’s first-half strike.

It was a crucial three points that somewhat eased the pressure off Steve Cooper, however, failure to follow that up with a positive result against Southampton could see further doubts creep in.

Cooper has been working with a restricted squad as 12 Leicester players were called up for their countries’ international matches.

The Leicester boss will be desperate for his players to return in good shape as it’s not only three points they’re eyeing up against the Saints.

Leicester can extend Ben Brereton Diaz’s winless Premier League record

Leicester went six Premier League games without securing a victory before beating the Cherries last time out.

It was a testing period for the supporters, who were desperate to watch their side wrap up their first three points in the top flight.

Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz knows all about winless runs in the Premier League. His streak of 20 matches without tasting victory is the longest any player has gone in the history of the competition, as per The Athletic.

It puts him ahead of ex-Burnley and Bolton striker Marvin Sordell (17), Emmanuel Villa (16) and former West Brom forward Jonathon Leko (14).

Brereton Diaz spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, scoring six times in 14 matches while failing to win.

The Chile striker then signed for Southampton this summer and continued that run, with the Saints winless in their opening seven games.

Leicester’s next three games are crucial

It’s an early relegation six-pointer for Leicester at St Mary’s and both sides will fancy their chances of securing a much-needed victory.

For Cooper and the Foxes, this match sets up an important period of fixtures in October and November that will decide their fate during the Christmas period.

Following their trip to the South Coast, Leicester host rivals Nottingham Forest at the King Power before travelling to Ipswich Town at the start of November.

Leicester have been backed to avoid relegation this season but to prove that faith correct, they must clinch victories in their winnable games.

It’s fine margins at the bottom of the Premier League, and although Cooper’s men are 15th, only three points separates them from 18th place Crystal Palace.
