Alan Shearer says Leicester City had one key decision go against them vs Brighton

Leicester City finally ended their losing streak and goalless drought in the Premier League with a 2-2 draw away against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bilal El Khannouss stole the show for Leicester as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side secured their first Premier League point since January at the Amex Stadium, with Stephy Mavididi and Caleb Okoli on the scoresheet for the Foxes.

The draw could have been turned into a win had decisions gone in other directions, though, with Brighton awarded two penalties against Leicester as the Seagulls dispatched both to ensure that the points were shared.

Yet for Alan Shearer, one of the penalties to go against Leicester should not have counted on the day.

Alan Shearer says Brighton’s second penalty vs Leicester should not have counted

Speaking on Match of the Day, the Premier League legend claimed that Luka Thomas’ foul on Matt O’Riley ‘wasn’t a clear and obvious error’ as Brighton were still awarded a penalty via the help of VAR.

With Leicester ending a 76-day wait to score a Premier League goal, the away end would have had a party-like atmosphere have the Foxes managed the improbable and secured all three points on the road against Brighton.

Yet the footballing gods were not fully on Leicester’s side, and Shearer believes that Brighton’s second penalty should not have stood given how unclear Thomas’ foul on O’Riley was inside the 18-yard box.

Shearer said: “This one, the referee on the pitch doesn’t give it. If he does, then they’re not going to overturn it, so I was really surprised that they told him to go to the screen. I know he’s got hold of him a little bit, but is he going over as well? I just thought it wasn’t a clear and obvious error, I don’t agree with it.”

Leicester should still be proud of their Brighton performance

Leicester’s hopes of remaining in the Premier League might still be a fantasy, but there were a lot of positives to take from their away performance against Brighton, which finally brought the losing streak to an end.

Mavididi finally showed his quality for Leicester with a crucial goal for the Foxes to ensure that a point was won, whilst Okoli’s performance also shed some light on the performances that could be put on with the right system in place.

Indeed, beating the drop at this stage feels like an impossible task, but Leicester will take confidence into their final six Premier League games after this weekend’s result away to Brighton, who this season are dreaming of Europe.
