‘Can’t believe that’… Steve Cooper baffled by refereeing decision in Arsenal v Leicester City

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper was left baffled by one refereeing decision vs Arsenal.

The Foxes were undone late on against Arsenal as they lost 4-2 in a scoreline that certainly didn’t reflect on what Leicester City deserved.

It was a brilliant defensive display in the second half that was most certainly worthy of a point away from home against a Champions League side for Leicester City.

Steve Cooper’s side did very well, with Mads Hermansen in-between the sticks making a significant impact, and the Foxes boss most certainly made a correct call in keeping James Justin in the side, who bagged a brace and sparked a potential comeback for the Leicestershire based team.

As Leicester City came so close to a brilliant point on the road, Cooper has reflected on one moment in the game that could have easily swayed the outcome of the game, something that the manager has shown that he ‘can’t believe’.

Steve Cooper reflects on refereeing decision that cost Leicester City

The Foxes got off to a slow start in their trip to Arsenal, and they had to overturn a two-goal deficit following an attacking overload from Arsenal.

Whilst the Gunners were without a shadow of a doubt the better side in the first half, one decision made the challenge even more difficult in the second half for the Foxes, which Cooper has since reflected on.

In the build up to Arsenal’s opener, which was scored by Gabriel Martinelli, Jamie Vardy was involved in a clash that saw him brought down when being dispossessed.

Per BBC Sport on X, Cooper had his say on the incident, where he said: “I don’t want refereeing decisions to be the headlines from me, because I’m trying to stand up and be counted for a run of results that we hoped would be better.

“So l don’t want to be seen to be deflecting, but we do feel that Vards was clearly fouled and we also can’t believe that the left-back hasn’t been sent off.”

Leicester City will feel hard done by after Arsenal defeat

The decision to not overturn Arsenal and Martinelli’s opener is one of the many things that happened in the game that went against Leicester City, and they will most certainly feel hard done by after such a resolute defensive display that is by no means reflected in the final score, which saw the hosts bag four goals.

It most certainly is a performance to build on regarding Hermansen’s showing, and Justin’s game, who was out of form in the lead up to the match.

It will take a lot to keep his side in high spirits after yet another defeat, and the fact that they are still yet to claim their first win of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, however Cooper must praise his side for such a performance, and then he can look to improve on the attacking front.
