Leicester City ace insists ‘nothing to worry about’ despite recent absence from squad

Steve Cooper is paid to make big decisions at Leicester City and he has certainly done that in his short time in charge so far.

One of the biggest talking points amongst the Leicester City faithful this season has been the absence of right-back Ricardo Pereira.

The 30-year-old has been a key figure for Leicester across over six years but Steve Cooper has instead preferred to play James Justin at right-back and Victor Kristiansen at left-back.

Another decision that has left supporters puzzled is the refusal to play Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi in the same side after the wingers enjoyed so much success as Leicester won the Championship last season.

One decision he looks to have got right is the central defensive pairing of Wout Faes and Caleb Okoli, though, as they helped Leicester to a first league clean sheet of the season in the 1-0 win against Bournemouth.

Jannik Vestergaard 100% ready for Leicester City

The partnership of Faes and Okoli is growing on a weekly basis and this is bad news for Jannik Vestergaard.

Vestergaard started the first two league matches of the season but was poor and found himself dropped to the bench in the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the third game.

The Dane has since been out the squad with an ankle problem but could see that absence continue with Conor Coady perhaps ahead of him in the pecking order as the back-up centre-back.

Vestergaard has now spoken to Danish outlet V2, where he provided an update on his situation whilst on international duty, saying: “Status is good. I feel good and feel fresh and motivated. I’m generally in top form game-wise. So, I’m 100 percent ready.

“I have been back in training for the past week. Nothing to worry about. It’s the Premier League and it’s high-level competition. And so, it is also about the places. So, there is nothing strange about it.

“But it doesn’t help to wiggle around and make yourself incapacitated when there is competition for places. It’s not usually the best recipe.”

Steve Cooper will stick with current Leicester back four

Even with Vestergaard returning, there is not expected to be any change to the Leicester backline.

The back four is the most settled part of Cooper’s side, with the quartet of Justin, Faes, Okoli and Kristiansen starting each of the last five Premier League matches.

A first clean sheet at the weekend is another step in the right direction for the Foxes and the pairing of Faes and Okoli has the makings of one that can keep Leicester in the Premier League.

Should anything happen to either of the current starters, it will be a toss-up between Coady and Vestergaard and it would be intriguing to see who Cooper chooses.
