The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) have released a statement confirming why Leicester City striker Patson Daka withdrew from the squad.
Daka was set to be a part of Avram Grant’s 19-man squad who would take on Russia in a friendly on 25 March, only for Daka to withdraw with immediate effect earlier in the week.
He was one of many high-profile names missing from the squad but now the FA has confirmed why the Foxes forward has returned to the East Midlands earlier than planned.
Patson Daka released from international duty early due to work permit issues
Whilst some players have been forced to leave due to injury, Daka’s case is slightly different.
Zambia boss Grant revealed that the 26-year-old asked to leave the squad due to work permit-related issues that could prevent him from playing for the Foxes if not sorted in time.
A statement from Secretary General Reuben Kamanga, via Zambian Digest, stated: “Regarding Patson Daka, his club has asked for his excuse during the international break to facilitate the renewal of his work permit.
“His current permit has expired, and the club needs his presence to complete the process with government authorities. The international break was the only time they could handle the paperwork.”
Daka’s last appearance for Zambia came back in June 2024 during a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Patson Daka must step up and help Leicester survive
With only nine games of the season left, it’s time for Daka to stand up and prove he has what it takes to play for Leicester.
At this moment in time, the forward has scored one goal all season – which came on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge in November.
It’s a pitiful return and sums up his time at Leicester, where Daka has cost the Foxes £1.9m per goal scored from his 114 appearances.
Some of those have been highs like a four-goal haul against Spartak Moscow but ultimately, Daka hasn’t been good enough.
