Leicester City are heading straight back to the Championship barring a major miracle.

Defeat against Brentford, coupled with a win for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend has left them five points off safety and second from bottom in the table.

Even optimistic fans like Gary Lineker now believe Leicester will be relegated and with 12 games left of the season, it’s hard to disagree.

The King Power Stadium faithful are also growing increasingly impatient with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Several fans want Van Nistelrooy sacked after he oversaw a 10th defeat in 11 Premier League games.

By the time Leicester play West Ham United on Thursday, they could find themselves eight points off 17th if Wolves beat Fulham.

A return to the second tier feels inevitable and with that, Leicester will almost certainly be looking for a new manager, and they should consider turning to a former player for the role.

Leicester City should make Richie Wellens their new manager

Plenty of names have been mentioned when it comes to the idea of having a new Leicester manager.

Sean Dyche is wanted by Foxes fans whilst there have also been suggestions that the Blues should ponder asking Martin O’Neill to come back.

However, it’s likely that none of those would fancy the Championship, especially with the threat of PSR still looming over Leicester’s heads.

That’s why Richie Wellens makes perfect sense. Wellens is currently in charge of League One side Leyton Orient and has them defying the odds and challenging for a League One play-off spot.

Wellens has history of winning promotion in his time as a manager, taking Orient and Swindon Town to League Two promotion by winning the title, as well as winning the EFL Trophy with Salford City.

The 44-year-old spent five years with the Foxes as a player and played 129 times, scoring four times. He was a fan favourite and won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2011.

Richie Wellens’ comments suggest he would be open to Leicester job

As it stands, there are no rumours linking Wellens with the Leicester job, but, his record can’t be ignored.

Furthermore, his attacking style of play would very much suit the way Leicester want to play and his knowledge of lower league football, as well as top flight experience.

His work hasn’t gone unnoticed and Wellens has been linked with the likes of Blackburn Rovers in recent months.

When asked about the prospect of being linked with moves away earlier in the season, Wellens’ comments suggested he would very much be open to the Leicester job if it ever became available.

He said in August 2024: “I look at some Championship managers that haven’t won anything; I’ve won two league titles now for teams that had no right to do that at the start of the season.

“I would like jobs that can give you success, when you have the right to win every single week.

I’m also very patient and very loyal, and the owners here have been fantastic with me. I want to try to max out and achieve something really special, and if we can do it – great.”
