Steve Cooper needs ‘anonymous’ player to step up more than ever after Leicester City double injury blow

One Leicester City man has the opportunity to become key for the side after his poor start to the campaign.

The Foxes are currently undergoing a difficult stint in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, with several challenging games coming up for Steve Cooper’s side.

The Leicester City boss’ future at the club is currently at stake, and there are murmurs that he possibly only has until the end of the calendar year to prove he is worthy of keeping the Foxes away from relegation back to the Championship.

However, that task will be made much more difficult with the recent double injury blow handed to the team, with Leicester City attacking pair Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu both picking up injuries whilst on international duty with Ghana.

As a result, there is one Leicester City star who must show his worth now and slot in for the absent duo.

Leicester City attacker Bilal El Khannouss must now step up amid injuries

The Foxes signed Moroccan international Bilal El Khannouss in the summer for a large £21million sum, and it could be argued that he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations so far in the 2024/25 Premier League season, putting in some ‘anonymous’ performances, per Leicestershire Live.

In fairness to the 20-year-old, he has been handed only seven appearances so far, with just one seeing him handed a start in the side. However, he is still yet to notch a single goal or assist for the side, and has not shown any clear signs of attacking prowess, with him being overshadowed by his teammates.

Cooper will have expected much more from the Moroccan, and it looks likely that he will finally be handed his chance to shine, and he must take it with the manager’s patience likely to be running somewhat scarce.

Bilal El Khannouss must reenact 2023/24 qualities at Leicester City

It is clear that El Khannouss hasn’t quite been able to live up to the high level and intensity of the Premier League so far during his limited time on the pitch, but that isn’t to say that he has bags of quality still yet to be utilised.

In the 2023/24 season with Belgian side Genk, he managed three goals and notched six assists in 27 appearances at-the age-of-19, so it is clear that he has the raw ability to build on during his time at Leicestershire.

His only start so far this season in-fact came in the win against Bournemouth, and whilst he wasn’t instrumental in the victory, he still played a part.

He hasn’t quite shown the qualities of a £21million signing, but with time he will come good, and he will not get a better opportunity to display that than the coming weeks.
