Champions League player admits he ‘was very close’ to joining Leicester last summer

Leicester City’s recruitment this season has come under fire for being a key reason behind the Foxes’ poor form in the Premier League.

The King Power Stadium side sit 19th in the standings with nine games to go as Ruud van Nistelrooy faces the impossible of trying to catch up with Wolves in the table to avoid another relegation down to the Championship.

With Troy Deeney slamming Leicester’s recruitment policy since returning to the Premier League, it’s clear that a good chunk of blame for this season’s misfortunes lies with sporting director Jon Rudkin, who has quickly become a villain of sorts in the East Midlands.

And a UEFA Champions League player has now said he was close to joining Leicester last summer from a Premier League team.

Jakub Moder says he was ‘very close’ to joining Leicester City

Speaking to Meczyki, Feyenoord midfielder Jakub Moder revealed that he was close to joining Leicester last summer before the transfer broke down and the Polish international picked up an injury, with the 25-year-old moving to Rotterdam in January.

Leicester were strongly linked with Moder in both the summer and winter transfer windows this season, yet the move wasn’t to be as Feyenoord won the race for the Brighton man, who has since impressed in the Netherlands.

Moder said when asked about last summer’s move: “I wanted to leave Brighton earlier. Last summer, I was very close to Leicester City, but many things happened that the transfer didn’t work out, the transfer domino had to go, and I also had an injury.

“So, I wanted to leave in the summer, because I had a feeling what role awaited me at Brighton in the next six months. I would probably be at Leicester now, but would it be better? We don’t know. Now I’m at Feyenoord and it’s great.”

Leicester missed out on a top signing in Jakub Moder

It feels almost poetic that the one signing Leicester missed out on making in January is one that could have had the potential to turn the Foxes’ season around, with Moder thriving since leaving Brighton for Feyenoord.

The 25-year-old recently scored in the UEFA Champions League for Feyenoord against Inter Milan having played every minute against the Italian giants and AC Milan in the play-off round, with the midfielder also featuring heavily in the Eredivisie.

Indeed, Leicester missed out on a top signing in Moder, and with the Foxes heading towards Premier League relegation, the midfielder will be pleased with his decision to join Feyenoord rather than Van Nistelrooy’s side.
