Leicester City reject £10m bid from Sunderland for ‘wonderful’ talent with second offer lined up

Leicester City’s situation at the bottom of the Premier League is desperate, yet their urgency to get signings through the door hasn’t been.

Woyo Coulibaly’s £3m transfer from Parma remains Leicester City’s only signing of the January transfer window.

Frustratingly, Leicester are unlikely to sign anyone else on deadline day, despite Ruud van Nistelrooy’s demand to capture three more faces.

While chances of incomings are at a premium, the Foxes could still see some players exit the club, having already seen Hamza Choudhury and Tom Cannon depart for Sheffield United.

Indeed, another Championship side want a Leicester player before the window slams shut, with Van Nistelrooy rejecting a bid for one of his stars.

Leicester City reject Sunderland’s £10m bid for Kasey McAteer

According to The Athletic, Leicester have rejected an £8m bid rising to £10m with add-ons from Sunderland for winger Kasey McAteer.

The Black Cats are looking to bolster their squad as they aim to win the Championship title, and although their first offer was rebuffed, they could come in with a second bid.

The report claims that Leicester are eyeing up a replacement and successfully doing so could see the Republic of Ireland star move on.

McAteer, who has previously been described as ‘wonderful’, has been on the fringes of the action in the Premier League, starting just four matches and assisting once.

Van Nistelrooy has preferred to use the likes of Jordan Ayew and Facundo Buonanotte on the right flank instead of him, with the 23-year-old perhaps seeking regular first-team football.

Selling McAteer would be a mistake

In an ideal scenario, Leicester would find a top-quality replacement for the fleet-footed winger, although they could have left it too late.

Instead, the Foxes must consider keeping the talented winger, who perhaps isn’t Premier League-level quality, but would be an invaluable asset in the Championship – should they suffer relegation.

McAteer truly burst onto the scene under Enzo Maresca last season, scoring four goals in his first six starts.

An injury then derailed his chances of playing regularly from the off following the emergence of Abdul Fatawu on the right.

However, the youngster still proved his talent in the second-tier and Leicester could therefore regret selling him this month if they suffer relegation in May.
