Forget Jordan Ayew… £21m Leicester City ace was Steve Cooper’s one shining light vs Man Utd

Leicester City fell to a rather embarrassing 5-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday.

The Foxes were far from their best when they travelled to Old Trafford for a last-16 Carabao Cup tie against the Red Devils.

As has so often been the case in 2024/25, Leicester City were massively exposed defensively, shipping four goals in the first half.

The result was so bad that fans have even called for Steve Cooper to be sacked before their next Premier League outing against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

A number of players failed to impress on the night, with Cooper now facing an easy decision over James Justin.

The right-back played a role in four of Manchester United’s five goals on the night, with Leicester fans slamming Justin for his display against the Manchester outfit.

It was not all completely negative for the Midlands outfit on October 30th, however.

Bilal El Khannouss was rare positive for Leicester City vs Manchester United

Cooper opted to make a staggering nine changes to the side that lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last week.

This allowed a number of fringe players to stake a claim for a regular starting berth in the league going forward.

Jordan Ayew played well when deployed as a number nine against Manchester United.

Elsewhere, £21m summer addition Bilal El Khannouss impressed, especially in the second 45, on what was a rare start for the midfielder.

El Khannouss scored Leicester’s first goal of the game and was given a joint-team-high 7 player rating by Leicestershire Live.

They wrote: “He was anonymous early on, but then scored a lovely goal, hitting the ball ever so well to slide in his first for the club.

“That raised his confidence levels and he connected play well after that, showing off some quick turns and intricate passes around the box. But he did concede the free-kick for United’s third.”

Elsewhere, as per Sofascore, he completed 89 percent of his total passes, made two key passes, had 45 touches and was given a 7.1 rating.

Will Bilal El Khannouss start for Leicester City vs Ipswich Town

El Khannouss started in a more advanced midfield role against Manchester United in midweek.

This allowed the Belgian more freedom and ability to showcase the attacking side of his game.

However, it is hard to see the player being afforded a second start in a row when Leicester face Ipswich.

Facundo Buonanotte has been sensational for the Foxes since his summer switch and he is expected to reclaim the number 10 spot on Saturday.

The Argentine could be moved out wide to make room for El Khannouss but that would then mean Cooper would have to drop another in-form star in Abdul Fatawu.
