Leicester City decided to let Tom Cannon leave the club permanently in the January transfer window, much to fan’s annoyance.

Leicester City had a disastrous transfer window, which included letting Tom Cannon leave permanently.

The Foxes recalled Cannon from Stoke City last month after the striker had hit nine goals in the Championship for The Potters.

With attacking options limited at the King Power Stadium this season, especially as Odsonne Edouard stayed put, it seemed like a wise move.

However, rather than trying to embed him into Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, Leicester fans were left furious when Cannon was sold.

The number nine had interest from several clubs but was eventually allowed to move to Championship high-flyers, Sheffield United.

How Tom Cannon felt about leaving Leicester City

Sheffield United fans tore into Cannon after his uninspiring debut for the Blades against Hull City late last month.

Given their lack of transfer business during the winter, however, Leicester probably wish they had kept him around.

The player himself, however, was seemingly looking to secure a move with a report from The Athletic claiming that he ‘wanted to move on to further his career by gaining more game time’.

As for Leicester, the report states that they made no reluctant sales in the winter window, seemingly suggesting they were happy to let Cannon go.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Tom Cannon comments now look pretty silly

As already mentioned, there was some fan backlash following the sale of the ex-Everton man.

However, it did look as though it could be turned into a positive when Van Nistelrooy commented on Cannon’s exit in January, suggesting his sale would allow signings to be made.

He said: “We’re looking at options to strengthen the squad. The deal with Tom is part of that.

“I believe in the players we have now, but we’re looking for players to really strengthen the squad.

“We’re still in the process. Things change when players are leaving, like Tom. But it’s clear what are the possibilities and what are not.”

Not a single player was brought to Leicester after Cannon’s departure, however, no doubt leaving fans to ponder why on earth he was sold in January if the money raised was not reinvested back into the team.
