Leicester City fans will be excited for the 2024/25 campaign to end as they pray for a clean slate in the Championship.

Leicester’s 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday night left the Foxes 15 points adrift of safety and condemned to relegation.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men have lost eight matches in a row without scoring in each, becoming the first team in Premier League history to achieve such a feat.

It’s been embarrassing five months since Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper in November, seeing their chances of surviving relegation slowly fade away.

The Leicester players are just playing for pride now but as seen in recent matches, they couldn’t look any less interested about the current state of the club.

Stuart Attwell on VAR for Brighton vs Leicester

Former winger Matt Piper has blasted the Leicester players for ‘throwing the towel in’ against Newcastle, claiming he’s never seen it as bad as this.

The Foxes have gone down without a fight, and that is a worrying sign, especially with more tough fixtures on the horizon.

Leicester travel to Brighton on Saturday. The Seagulls find themselves in ninth position, seeing the visit of City as a chance to boost their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Ahead of the clash at the AMEX, the Premier League have announced that Darren Bond will referee the fixture while Jeremy Simpson is the fourth official, and Stuart Attwell is on VAR.

Attwell has controlled VAR in 10 Leicester matches, including on five occasions this term. The 42-year-old has largely avoided criticism from the fanbase but they’ll never forget one decision he made in a clash against Brighton previously.

Attwell had a nightmare against Brighton in 2021

In September 2021, Brendan Rodgers took his Leicester side to Brighton in the Premier League, aiming to build on their European prospects.

City sadly lost the match 2-1, but the result wasn’t decided without controversy, as referee Attwell made numerous controversial errors.

Attwell awarded Brighton a penalty in the 35th minute for a handball against Jannik Vestergaard, although replays showed that the Leicester defender was fouled by Neal Maupay.

That was one of three contentious decisions that went against the Foxes in that fixture and ultimately cost them the chance of three points.

Although there is nothing to play for this weekend other than pride for Leicester, supporters will remember how badly they were done by on the South Coast in 2021.
