‘Disgrace’… Leicester City fans outraged as details of Tom Cannon’s transfer to Sheffield United now revealed

Tom Cannon’s Leicester City future has dominated the headlines this week, with it not being known whether he was staying put, getting loaned out or sold.

Leicester recalled Tom Cannon from his Stoke City loan on Wednesday after he plundered 11 goals in 25 appearances for the Potters.

Interest has since emerged in the striker, and it was reported earlier this week that Sunderland were willing to pay £13 million to sign Cannon.

This transfer news left a bitter taste in the mouths of many, as some Leicester fans felt Cannon deserved a chance under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

It doesn’t look like their hopes will come to fruition, though, as Leicester have now accepted Sheffield United’s £13m bid for Cannon, as per Alan Nixon on Friday.

The Foxes are set to make a profit on the £7 million they paid Everton for the 22-year-old in 2023 but due to a clause in his contract, they won’t see the full £13m.

Fans react to Leicester City selling Tom Cannon as sell-on clause details emerge

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton inserted a 25% sell-on clause in Cannon’s contract, meaning Leicester will receive just £9.75 million of the total fee and £7.5 million upfront.

Taking to social media to react to this news, the resounding response from the fans was that, Leicester shouldn’t be selling Cannon, especially when they’re at a huge risk of being relegated.

“We’re genuinely a disgrace,” one fan wrote while another replied: “£0.5M profit then? We’re hopeless man”

“Won’t replace him and lose a striker which we need. Not good business,” a third stated.

Many fans directed their anger towards Jon Rudkin, who has come under fire for his detrimental decision-making during his time as Director of Football.

“You watch us not replace him this transfer window… #rudkinout #lcfc,” a fifth replied while a sixth commented: “Disgrace of an outfit. Boycott the KP until the board is gone.”

“It’s not like Leicester to waste talent. Cannon was never given a chance. Unfortunate,” a seventh pointed out.

Leicester making a mistake selling Cannon

For a side struggling to score goals, with only two scored in the past six league games, the logical thing would be to keep as many strikers as possible.

Some may think Cannon isn’t good enough for the Premier League, and that is perhaps true, but Leicester need to think of the bigger picture.

There is a huge chance the Foxes get relegated this season and the Republic of Ireland international is the perfect candidate to lead the line, especially if Jamie Vardy leaves.

Tom Cannon’s Championship stats 2024/25
22 games played
9 goals scored
2.5 shots per game
16% goal conversion
0.5 key passes per game

The above table proves that the youngster, while not the most technically gifted, is a proficient second-tier striker and a clinical finisher in and around the box.

To lose him to a side that could replace them in the Premier League next season is a gamble and one of the reasons Leicester shouldn’t sell Cannon.
