Ruud van Nistelrooy warned of major ‘stumbling block’ in race to sign key Leicester City target

Leicester City fans have grown increasingly frustrated with the club’s lack of transfer activity in this window.

There’s only two days left of the January transfer window and so far, Leicester’s only signing is Woyo Coulibaly, the powerful right-back who joined from Parma.

That is despite Ruud van Nistelrooy wanting to improve four positions having outlined his priorities when he arrived at the King Power Stadium.

Although Van Nistelrooy issued an encouraging transfer update on Thursday, claiming the club are working on new signings, time is running out to complete deals.

The Foxes have a limited budget to spend and being 17th in the Premier League table has made it difficult to attract players, as demonstrated by them hitting a problem in the race for a new winger.

Leicester City can’t afford to sign Wolfsburg winger Patrick Wimmer

Leicester were linked with Patrick Wimmer on Thursday, the Wolfsburg winger who is currently enjoying a decent season in the Bundesliga with one goal and four assists.

The Foxes have been joined by AC Milan and Juventus in the race to sign him in this window, although according to The Express, Leicester have already hit a major ‘stumbling block’ in the deal.

With PSR issues hampering what they can spend, Van Nistelrooy can’t afford to capture the Austrian permanently, as Wolfsburg are demanding a ‘sizeable’ offer to sell him.

Instead, the report claims Leicester are exploring the possibility of a loan deal but since Ralph Hasenhuttl is reluctant to lose a key player midway through the season, it’s unlikely an agreement will be struck.

It leaves City either needing to stump up the cash for him or move onto a different target, with the latter being preferred.

Leicester only targeting loan players from abroad

There have been claims Van Nistelrooy could exit Leicester if he isn’t properly backed in this transfer window and the Dutchman will feel a sense of anger.

Granted, funds at Leicester are limited due to PSR constraints but the owners need to open the chequebook, otherwise, survival is unlikely.

This is why the manager will be frustrated that Leicester’s plan is to only target loan players from abroad as opposed to permanent deals, hence why they only want Wimmer temporarily.

In the battle for Premier League survival, only utilising the loan market could be a big mistake, as the division’s strugglers need sufficient quality, and fast.

Sadly, not being proactive in the window and trying to penny-pinch at every opportunity could not only see Van Nistelrooy walk from his job but also result in an immediate return to the Championship.
