Why the next four Leicester City fixtures will define Steve Cooper’s future and survival hopes

Leicester City can consider themselves very unlucky not to have taken anything from the away trip to Arsenal on Saturday.

Steve Cooper is still hunting his first Premier League win as Leicester City manager but a point against Arsenal could have proved a turning point for the divisive manager.

Cooper felt the brunt of Leicester supporters’ frustrations as he was confronted by a fan during the 0-0 Carabao Cup draw with League Two Walsall last week.

This reaction would have really hammered home the discontent to the Leicester hierarchy who may well be starting to consider the possibility of replacing Cooper just three months after appointing the Welshman as Enzo Maresca‘s successor.

However, the battling display at The Emirates will have perhaps bought Cooper a bit more time despite two second-half stoppage time goals eventually undoing the Foxes’ resistance.

Leicester City must win two of their next four at a minimum

That defeat left Leicester on three points from six games since promotion, with draws against Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Having been 2-0 up against Palace and playing at home against an Everton side who were without a point prior to the meeting last weekend, it is difficult for Leicester fans to accept their lowly points tally so far.

With that in mind, the next four league matches could be absolutely vital to not only Cooper’s job prospects but Leicester’s chances of survival.

In their next four Premier League fixtures, Leicester arguably have four winnable games. Next up is a home game against Bournemouth, before matches against Southampton, rivals Nottingham Forest, and Ipswich Town.

These are all teams that are likely to be mindful of relegation this season – especially fellow newly-promoted Saints and Ipswich – and Cooper surely has to take at least six points form a possible 12 to have any chance of keeping his job.

Leicester City could revisit move for Graham Potter if Cooper sacked

Cooper was not Leicester’s first choice to replace Maresca in the summer and if the board do decide to sack the 44-year-old then they could consider another move for Graham Potter.

Potter was the primary target in the summer but was thought to be holding off for the England job in the hopes it would become available after Euro 2024.

Given Gareth Southgate has been temporarily replaced by Lee Carsley, Potter may have given up hope of taking on the Three Lions and the chance to get back to work at a Premier League club may tempt the former Chelsea boss.

This would likely be considered a far more inspired appointment by the Leicester faithful and could help transform the club’s season.
