Leicester City have confirmed the departure of sought-after striker Tom Cannon to Sheffield United.

His future has been a talking point in recent weeks after Leicester made the decision to recall Cannon from Stoke City.

Four Championship clubs were interested in Cannon, who had impressed out on loan with 11 goals in all competitions but in the end it was Sheffield United who won the race to sign the 22-year-old.

After agreeing a fee on Monday, Cannon had a medical at Bramall Lane before being unveiled by the Blades.

The move has sparked anger from Leicester supporters, who branded Cannon’s move a ‘disgrace’.

Leicester City confirm Tom Cannon transfer to Sheffield United

It’s been a saga that’s been lurking in the background as the Foxes look to recruit this transfer window.

Following news of his departure to Chris Wilder’s side, Leicester confirmed the sale of the 22-year-old in a statement.

It said: “We can confirm a deal has been agreed between Leicester City and Sheffield United for the permanent transfer of striker Tom Cannon, subject to league approval.

“The 22-year-old joined us from Everton in September 2023 and made 16 appearances in all competitions last term, as we made an immediate return to the Premier League.

He spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan with Stoke City, and will now return to the Sky Bet Championship as a Sheffield United player.

“Tom leaves King Power Stadium with our thanks and best wishes for his future career.”

In his 18 months in the East Midlands Cannon failed to set the world alight, playing 16 times and scoring three goals following his £7.5m move from Everton in 2023.

There is chance that Cannon could be joined by another Leicester star with Hamza Choudhury wanted by the Blades on loan.

Leicester must reinvest Tom Cannon money into playing squad

The Foxes have reportedly received £10m with the chance of earning extra in add-ons at a later date.

Leicester want to sign five players this month and have got limited funds due to the club’s ongoing PSR fears.

A loan was taken out by Leicester on Tuesday which is also evidence that the owners want to back Ruud van Nistelrooy this transfer window.

It’s believed that £12-£14m was made available for transfers before Cannon’s departure but the extra money pocketed may mean a ‘better’ player could be brought to the King Power Stadium.
