Chris Sutton reveals why he isn’t surprised by Leicester City’s awful form

Leicester City are facing an uphill battle to stay in the Premier League this season.

Form has fell off the edge of a cliff for the Foxes, who have lost seven league games in a row.

Defeat against Tottenham Hotspur would match an unwanted 24-year record for Leicester and things really can’t get much worse than this.

The majority of Leicester fans want Ruud van Nistelrooy to stay and believe he can turn it around, but results must improve drastically.

Chris Sutton warned Van Nistelrooy about taking the job before his appointment in November and now, two months on, he doesn’t seem too shocked by the Midlander’s terrible run.

Chris Suton says Leicester City took ‘massive punt’ by appointing Ruud van Nistelrooy

There have been mixed reactions from the media in response to Van Nistelrooy’s start at the King Power Stadium.

Simon Jordan has urged Leicester to keep the Dutchman and even if some sections of the Leicester fanbase want him gone, the Foxes’ owners have made their feelings clear on the current boss.

That doesn’t mean the 48-year-old is immune from criticism and Sutton believes it was always destined to fail due to the risk Leicester took.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “He wasn’t part of the thought process when Leicester appointed Steve Cooper, but then because he was caretaker manager when Manchester United beat them twice, all of a sudden it’s, ‘oh, he must be good’.

“Talk about gambling. It was a massive punt. I don’t mean it in a disrespectful way to Van Nistelrooy as he had a good year at PSV and he did a good job as caretaker of United.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy faces crucial run of fixtures as Leicester City manager

Every game is big but for Van Nistelrooy and co, it really is make or break for them.

Wolves and Ipswich have tough fixtures compared to Leicester, but the only focus should be on themselves.

A win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday could pull them out of the relegation zone should results go in their favour.

That’s followed up by a trip to Everton and home games against Arsenal and Brentford before rounding off the month against West Ham United.

Right now, all Leicester can do is focus on themselves and hope that they can do enough to turn the season around and stay in the top flight.
