Since appointing Ruud van Nistelrooy at the end of November 2024, Leicester City’s form has nosedived.

The Foxes weren’t exactly setting the Premier League alight before the Dutchman’s arrival.

Yet the stats clearly show Leicester have been worse under van Nistelrooy compared to former manager Steve Cooper.

Such has been the miserable run of form, some Leicester fans called for van Nistelrooy to resign after Wednesday’s defeat at Manchester City.

And with Leicester linked with Danny Rohl, among other managers, van Nistelrooy has now provided a fresh update on his future.

Ruud van Nistelrooy says he and the Leicester Board must ‘align’ on future

Speaking ahead of Monday night’s game against Newcastle, as presented by the When You’re Smiling BBC Radio Leicester podcast, van Nistelrooy gave the clearest indication yet that he may not be in charge at the King Power Stadium next season.

The 48-year-old said: “We have to find out over the coming weeks.”

“Coming in in December, and [with] how the winter window went, taking it into the new season and the challenges we face, it’s very important for me to be aligned.”

Van Nistelrooy added: “That alignment [with the Board] has to take place,” emphasising that “it needs to be sorted yesterday.”

As well as Rohl, Leicester have been linked with Liam Rosenior, indicating that a managerial change could be afoot.

Issues at Leicester City on and off the pitch

Naturally, Leicester’s form has provoked increased noise about the Dutchman’s position.

Having lost ten top-flight games at home already this season, Leicester will break a 141-year club record with defeat at home to Newcastle.

Yet the issues have not been all of van Nistelrooy’s making.

After spending big in the summer, Leicester only made one January signing, bringing in Woyo Coulibaly for £3m from Serie A side Parma.

It means van Nistelrooy has been working with a squad that was assembled for Cooper.

Nonetheless, he could still be getting more out of the team he has.

Ultimately, a major reset could therefore be taken ahead of next season, especially with plenty of other managers available to Leicester.
