Three reasons why the January transfer window was a disaster for Leicester City

The transfer window has been one to forget for Leicester City in simple terms.

Before 1 January, Ruud van Nistelrooy wanted to improve four positions. Now, after 11:00PM deadline on 3 February, only one player has joined the Foxes this month.

A tweet from Rob Tanner revealed Leicester incomings were unlikely and with no time left, he’s been proven right.

Leicester fans are rightfully angry with the lack of transfers and there are fears that Van Nistelrooy could quit the Foxes.

Although the January transfer window is renowned for being a difficult one to operate in, Leicester can’t help but feel short-changed when they look back on this month.

With that, here are three reasons why the January transfer window has been a disaster.

Leicester failed to recruit in key positions

It was obvious what Leicester needed to bring in this winter: a centre-back, full-back, winger and a striker.

Woyo Coulibaly’s arrival ticked the full-back box but in the two games so far, he has been restricted to two appearances off the bench.

Jannik Vestergaard and Wout Faes were woeful against Everton on Saturday and proved more than ever the need for defensive reinforcements.

Craig Dawson and Conor Coady almost moved in a swap deal, but that failed to take off and it would’ve hardly been an improvement.

Instead, the Foxes have missed out on plenty of targets and are now arguably worse off, with players like Odsonne Edouard earning plenty whilst not playing.

Jamie Vardy is the club’s top goal scorer with eight and can’t do it on his own.

Previous transfer mistakes caught up with Leicester

Leicester’s summer signings have all had varying degrees of success, but they’ve hardly set the world alight.

A seven-figure deal for Oliver Skipp looks to be a mistake whilst there were talks of Caleb Okoli leaving Leicester all month – despite joining from Atalanta in summer 2024.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Jordan Ayew are hot and cold and Edouard has been a straight up failure.

Bilal El Khannouss and Facundo Buonanotte aside, that’s valuable money wasted and has hindered their progress.

Rival clubs have strengthened around them

Leicester couldn’t afford to stall in the transfer window and let results slip on the pitch.

Both of those happened though and they could pay a costly price by the end of the season.

The Foxes are 18th in the Premier League and sit two points behind with Wolves.

However, a defeat against Wolves, a draw against Ipswich Town and losses to the likes of Everton mean Leicester are running out of chances.

Two of those three teams have bolstered their squad this month as well to give themselves the best chance of survival.

There is still time to turn things around, but the lack of movement could be something the Foxes come to regret.
