BBC pundit singles out ‘woeful’ Leicester City duo for performance in Everton loss

BBC pundit Ashley Williams was shocked by two of Leicester City’s players in the defeat to Everton – and not for the right reasons.

Leicester were embarrassed by Everton on Saturday as the Toffees scored four without reply to sink Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men back into the bottom three.

Everton made history against the Foxes by scoring after 10 seconds at Goodison Park as the mood in the away end turned sour.

Chants for John Rudkin to go could be heard audibly and there were even some Leicester fans claiming Van Nistelrooy could resign.

Nobody covered themselves in glory but there were two players in particular that made headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

Wout Faes and Jannik Vestergaard called out for awful performance

The Foxes have shipped goals for fun this season and despite the return of Mads Hermansen, that theme continued.

It could’ve been five after Gary Lineker agreed that Everton should’ve had a penalty in the first half when the score was 2-0.

At the heart of those issues were the defensive duo Jannik Vestergaard and Wout Faes.

Faes has been criticised this season whilst Vestergaard has been problematic, but the weekend took it to a new level.

Covering the game on Final Score, Williams admitted that he hadn’t seen defending as bad as he witnessed in a long time.

He said: “I can’t mention that without mentioning how poor Leicester have been.

“Again the defending is so woeful, it’s one straight pass, straight between the centre-backs, I haven’t seen defending this bad between two centre-halves for a long time, honestly. Wout Faes and Vestergaard are just wide open.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy rues costly start

Conceding a goal after 10 seconds is never the way to star a game and it set the tone for what turned out to be an awful afternoon on Merseyside.

In contrast to their hard-fought win at Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester lacked spirit and fight, with the Leicester boss admitting that they hadn’t done themselves any favours.

He told BBC Sport: “If you look at the scoreboard after 10 seconds and after five minutes, if you look at the goals, of course you don’t do yourself any favours to come here and get a result starting like that.

“It’s the little things. The first duel and sharpness to act accordingly. It can happen, it is football. We know the situation we are in. We are together and we want to push forward and get out of this situation.”
