Three things that need to happen in Leicester City’s dream January transfer window

Leicester City will be working hard in the January transfer window to arm Ruud van Nistelrooy with the funds to improve his squad.

Van Nistelrooy has already spoken about transfer plans heading into next month, and Leicester City have multiple areas of their squad that need improving.

A centre-back should be on the agenda as the Foxes have the third-worst defence in the Premier League, with only Southampton and Wolves conceding more goals than them.

The Dutchman may also be looking to shift some of his players on to create more room in his first-team squad.

So, with all that said, here’s what a dream transfer window could look like at Leicester City.

Ben Godfrey arrives from Atalanta

Leicester have been linked with centre-back Ben Godfrey heading into the transfer window, and the versatile defender would improve their back line.

Rio Ferdinand previously dubbed Godfrey ‘outstanding’ during his time at Everton and the 26-year-old would some much-needed pace and mobility to a relatively slow defence.

The Englishman shouldn’t be too difficult to prise away from Italy, as he’s only played four times since signing for Atalanta from Everton in the summer.

Also, with Wout Faes’ future in the air and both Conor Coady and Jannik Vestergaard in their thirties, Godfrey would provide van Nistelrooy with a much-needed long-term option.

Leicester send Odsonne Edouard back to Crystal Palace

Leicester were able to sign two loan players from Premier League clubs during the summer. Facundo Buonanotte has been a revelation from Brighton while Odsonne Edouard has endured a disastrous time since moving from Crystal Palace.

The French striker has only played 142 minutes in England’s top flight this term, failing to get into the side ahead of Jamie Vardy and never looking like the game-changer they need in attack.

Crystal Palace want to sell Edouard permanently, so Leicester will be hoping they recall the former Celtic forward in January.

This would be the best move for both parties, as it would allow van Nistelrooy to sign another loan player, perhaps Brighton’s Evan Ferguson while Palace will recoup some money for the 26-year-old.

Van Nistelrooy signs a new full-back

Full-back has been a problem area for Leicester this term. Ricardo Pereira is sidelined till March and he’d usually be a starter on the right or left.

Meanwhile, Leicester fans have urged James Justin to leave, with the Englishman struggling to reach the level in most games he’s played this term.

Left-back Victor Kristiansen has also had many afternoons to forget, including against Manchester United, where his lack of strength was exposed.

A new full-back on either side would not only add cover for a position they’re light in but also see one of Justin or Kristiansen axed from the starting XI.
