Leicester City icon Emile Heskey has admitted he is unsure about one of the candidates linked with the job.

Leicester are on the hunt for a new manager after the Foxes sacked Steve Cooper on Sunday.

Graham Potter has already turned down Leicester and David Moyes is also said to be out of the running.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Carlos Corberan have both been linked whilst some Foxes fans want Michael Carrick to take the reins.

There are plenty of candidates linked to the Leicester job but for Heskey, there is one man that they should avoid.

Emile Heskey unsure about Ruud van Nistelrooy

One of the early favourites to take the job is Van Nistelrooy.

An update confirmed that Van Nistelrooy hadn’t responded to Leicester as of yet, and the Dutchman has also been linked with a move to Hamburg – a club he spent time at as a player.

Van Nistelrooy has only spent one season in charge of a senior club, winning a domestic double with PSV in the 2022/23 season before leaving with one game to go after claiming he had a lack of support from the club.

He took charge of four games as interim manager at Manchester United recently, winning three and drawing one but for Heskey, it would be too big of a risk at this stage of the season.

Speaking to Leicestershire Live, he said: “Van Nistelrooy is a bit of an unknown.

“Because yeah, he’s done fantastic but it’s a different to do fantastic in a top team in Holland and arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world with Man United – they still have outstanding international players.

“And then to come into Leicester where the mood is quite low… yeah, it’s a very difficult one.”

Emile Heskey compares Steve Cooper sacking to personal experience

Having played over 100 times and coming through the Foxes academy, Heskey knows exactly what it means to represent Leicester.

And whilst the likes of Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were shocked by Cooper’s dismissal, the 46-year-old believed his boyhood club had made the right call and compared it to an experience he had when playing for Aston Villa.

“I think I agree with it [Cooper’s sacking],” he added. “The reality is it was a difficult appointment in the first place when you come in from Forest.

“I was at Aston Villa when Alex McLeish came from Birmingham – you’ve really got to hit the ground running. And it was difficult circumstances [Cooper] was coming into, with this Leicester side with a totally different philosophy to the previous manager.

“I think everything that accumulated, then a decision needed to be made. It is probably the right decision because it gives the next manager a real good chance to stay up. They’re just above the relegation zone right now so it’s not looking too bad.”
